Local SEO checklist for service businesses

A step-by-step local SEO checklist for clinics, studios, contractors and other businesses that serve a city: profile, website, reviews and citations.

Local SEO helps people near you find you when they search for what you do. Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including links and reviews). Google also says you cannot pay for a better local ranking (source).

You cannot change distance. You can work on the other two. Here is the checklist we use.

1. Google Business Profile

  • Claim and verify the profile.
  • Choose the right primary category and add only the extra categories that truly apply.
  • Fill in the business name exactly as you use it in real life. Do not add keywords to the name.
  • Add the address (or service area, if you travel to customers), phone number, website and opening hours. Keep holiday hours current.
  • List your services with a short plain description for each.
  • Add real photos of the premises, the team and your work. Replace old ones.
  • Post updates when you have something to say.

Google calls out keeping information complete and up to date as one of the ways to improve local results.

2. Reviews

Reviews help people choose you and add to your prominence.

  • Ask every happy customer, soon after the work, with a direct link to your review page.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and in your own words.
  • Never buy reviews, offer rewards for them, or ask only happy customers. Google’s rules do not allow it, and it can get reviews removed.
  • For a poor review, reply calmly, offer to fix it offline, and report it only if it breaks Google’s policy.

3. Your website

  • Put your business name, address and phone number on the site in text, in the same form as on your profile.
  • Make a clear page for each main service, with real detail: what it includes, how it works, who it is for, and a way to enquire.
  • Add a page for each location you truly serve from. Do not make pages that swap only the city name. They add nothing and can be treated as thin content.
  • Embed a map on the contact page.
  • Make the site fast and easy to use on a phone. See does page speed affect rankings.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data that matches the visible details. Plugins or your developer can do this.

4. Listings and citations

A citation is a mention of your business name, address and phone number on another site.

  • Use identical details everywhere. A different phone number or suite number creates doubt.
  • List the business in a few directories that matter in your trade and city, such as industry bodies and well-known local directories. Quality beats quantity.
  • Fix or remove duplicate listings.
  • Write helpful pages for questions your customers ask, using local detail only where it is true and useful.
  • Earn links the honest way: local associations, suppliers, sponsorships, press, and customers who mention you.

6. Check what is happening

  • Use the Business Profile performance figures: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • In Search Console, check queries that include your city or “near me”.
  • Track calls, WhatsApp taps and form sends as conversions so you can tell which ones become customers.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing the business name with keywords.
  • Using a virtual office or a shared address that you cannot be found at, since that can lead to suspension.
  • Letting hours go out of date.
  • Ignoring reviews for months.

How long it takes

Local changes can show within weeks, but a stronger position often takes longer, and it depends on competitors in your area. Be wary of anyone who guarantees “number one in the map pack”.

We handle profiles and reviews under GMB & ORM and the site side under SEO Services. If you want us to check your profile against this list, get in touch.
